  • Every computer that connects to the Internet needs to be protected from attack by viruses, trojans, worms, spyware, rootkits, malicious scripts, etc.

  • Strategies for protection against these threats include user training, hardening Windows, and use of protection softwares such as anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall and startup monitors.

  • Broadband connections (DSL or cable) and wireless connections to the Internet are more vulnerable to attack and therefore require additional protection.

  • Basic level protection. Every computer that connects to the Internet should have basic protections including anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall. Every person who uses the Internet should have some training about online security threats and how to avoid them.

  • Intermediate level protection. Additional protection is needed if you connect via broadband or wireless, or if you do online purchasing, online banking, online taxes, etc.

  • Advanced level protection. Even more protection is needed if you are using your computer for running a small business.
